Big Island ROV Regional (BIRR) Tournament

The Inaugural Big Island ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Regional (BIRR) competition was held at the Kona Aquatic Center with teams participating from Kealakehe High and Intermediate, Konawaena High, Nawahiokalani`opu`u, West Hawaii Explorations Academy High and Middle, Hilo Intermediate, and Parker Schools. The event was organized by Larry Rice from Kealakehe High School and supported by Hawaii County Research & Development, Hawaii Island Economic Development Board's (HIEDB) Women In Technology (WIT) program and the Marine Technology Education Center (MATE), based in Monterey, California. Many thanks also to community members and businesses who helped make BIRR a succss: Al Honey, Jim Lyke, Ed Wetherell, Tom Nordin, Jim Bell, Drew Medeiros, Rodger Sumner and Jimmy Johnson from the W.M. Keck Observatory, who volunteered as judges; award donations from Radio Shack-Kamuela, Lowes, Subway Sandwiches, Dairy Queen, Dominoes Pizza, Makalapua Cinemas, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Ace Hardwaare-Captain Cook, Ace Hardware-Kailua and Jamba Juice
