In 2003, Waimea Middle School was selected as one of 50 initial NASA Explorer Schools (NES) across the nation. On Monday, August 9, the entire school and several community members were present to witness a live videolink with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. After brief introductory speeches by school Principal Patricia Rice and NES Team Leader Jade Bowman, about 20 students were able to ask their personal questions to Astronaut Gennady Padalka and Michael Fincke.
