Photographs by Katie Whitman
Students grade 7-11 and their teachers attended a one week resident summer astronomy boot camp held at the Pacific Ocean Science and Technology (POST) Building at the University of Hawaii Manoa campus June 12-18, 2009. The Hawaii Student-Teacher Astronomy Retreat (HI-STAR) develops astronomy research skills and provides background for conducting original research projects. Besides physics and astronomy lectures, participants worked in a computer lab to do image processing, sue software to measure position and brightness of objects and do remote observing with the 2-meter Faulkes Telescope on Haleakala, Maui and 16-inch DeKalb Observatory Telescope in Auburn, Indiana. Students worked with astronomer mentors on comets and asteroids, galaxies, stars and protostars or exosolar planet group projects. In these pictures, Gary is conducting a science inquiry using real meteorites with the participants.
