DOE Space Education Summer Institute
The Hawaii Department of Education offered a week long series of activities to provide a content rich experience in space science and earth science through the Space Education Summer Institute during the week of June 14-18. 17 secondary school teachers from throughout Hawaii attended presentations by Mauna Kea observatories astronomers, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park geologists, and participated in relevant hands on experiences so that they may better address the science standards. The University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA) assisted by providing meeting venues, coordinating base and summit observatory facility tours, and providing speakers.

Many thanks to DOE Assistant Superintendent Pat Hamamoto, who helped create the program, and Art Kimura who made it happen in a very short time. Also many thanks to Subaru Telescope and James Clerk Maxwell Telescope for providing access to their facilities, the Visitor Information Station, Office of Mauna Kea Management, Joint Astronomy Centre, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Subaru and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Astronomy and Physics for providing speakers.
