A Crisis in the Urban Universe

15 Billion years ago, stellar cities known as galaxies were filled with youthful stars.  But, in today’s universe the youth have fled to small towns and the suburbs, leaving the cities to slowly age and die. Is this simply a case of stars fleeing bad neighborhoods, or are the galaxies themselves responsible for the decay?  Understanding why and how this happened is at the forefront of modern astronomy.
