Berkeley, California's Double Tree Hotel on the marina was the site of the AstroCon 2004 - a combined meeting of the Astronomical League (AL), Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) and American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). Gary represented the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA) with an exhibit, literature and videos; the AstroDay Institute and NASA Deep Impact mission were also featured.. The event was attended by over 450 amateur and research-oriented astronomers, educators and students from across the country. The IfA exhibit was visited by as many, if not more people, as the general public were invited to enjoy the vendor and research exhbitis. Gary met many old friends, and forged many new ones at this event, and was even invited by AL President Bob Gent to present a talk at next year's event, being held July 14-16, 2005 in Kansas City, Missouri. That will come on the heels of the Deep Impact encounter with Comet Tempel I, so it should be an exciting time. On Saturday, July 24, Kelly Beatty of Sky and Telescope magazine presented Gary with the National "Outstanding Event Year After Year" Award for AstroDay 2K4. Hana Hou!
